Cupels Drawing
Magnesia Cupels are made from a unique blend of Magnesium Oxide and special fluxing ingredients. Magnesia Cupels are sometimes incorrectly referred to as "magnesite" Cupellation is the last and most important step in the fire assay process, hence the quality of cupel is extremely important. During cupellation, the lead is oxidized to litharge (PbO), most of which is absorbed by the cupel. precious metals like Gold, silver, platinum and other precious metals form a bead in the cupel. The bead is subsequently used to determine its precious metal content . Cupels are of various types like magnesia MgO Cupels, bone ash Cupels, Portland cement Cupels etc... Generally cupellation furnace temperatures in gold and silver assays is 900-1000°C, but varies with technique, air flow volume and cupel material used.
